UCT’s Parent Orientation was a moment of pride, excitement and reflection as families from across South Africa – and beyond – gathered to mark the beginning of a transformative journey. The event welcomed parents into the UCT community, reassuring them that their children would not navigate this chapter alone. In his keynote address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela reminded parents that university life is as much their journey as it is their children’s. With around 4 000 first-year students embarking on this new path, UCT’s commitment to academic excellence, personal growth, and student well-being was at the heart of the programme.
From the emotional weight of letting go to the joy of seeing young minds step into a world of opportunity, parents expressed their hopes and anxieties. Many found comfort in UCT’s extensive support structures, which ensure students transition smoothly into university life. For many, this orientation was not just an introduction – it was a reaffirmation that their children were in the right place to thrive.
