The call for speakers for Soapbox Science Cape Town 2025 is now open.

Taking place in September/October 2025 (exact date to be confirmed), this public event brings science to unexpected places (like shopping malls), giving women and non-binary scientists a platform to showcase their research to the community.

Soapbox Science, launched in London in 2011, is a global initiative promoting visibility and engagement in science. The Cape Town edition, first held in 2019 at the V&A Waterfront, has grown significantly, engaging over 500 people in 2024. Hosted by the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Faculty of Science and organised by researchers from UCT, the South African Astronomical Observatory, iThemba Labs, and the University of the Witwatersrand, the event is free and open to all scientific fields.

If you’re a female or non-binary scientist (PhD level and above) in the Cape Town / Western Cape area, who is passionate about science communication, apply now. Only 12 speakers will be selected, and all will receive professional public engagement training.

Applications close on 12 April.
