Dear colleagues and students
It is with profound sadness that we share news of the passing of our colleague, Ms Ester Vuyiswa Nqayi (54). She passed away on Friday, 18 April 2025 due to natural causes.
Ms Nqayi joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) on 1 July 2016 as a general worker in the Campus Cleaning Services division in the Property and Services Department. Most recently, she was assigned to the Chemical Engineering Building on upper campus.
Ms Nqayi will be fondly remembered for her pride in her appearance – always neat, well dressed and wearing a beautiful smile. Her colleagues describe her as a humble and soft-spoken person who was deeply admired for her quiet strength and dedication. She was known as a hardworking individual and a woman of faith, often beginning her mornings in worship. Ms Nqayi was also a devoted daughter who cared deeply for her mother and supported her with love and commitment.
She is survived by her mother, Nowayindile; sister, Thabisa Nqoza; brother, Kadekile; daughters, Thandokazi and Kamva; and grandson, Ayama.
Ms Nqayi’s funeral will take place at Yonda village, Whittlesea in the Eastern Cape on Saturday, 3 May 2025.
The university has reached out to offer support to the Nqayi family, and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew Ms Nqayi.
Sincerely
The UCT Executive
