UCT public health expert gets top varsity award for human rights
“While our post-1994 democracy has removed formal race discrimination from the statute book and ushered in a constitutional dispensation that prioritises human rights across our society, we still see the consequences of inequality and discrimination today.” This reality has driven the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Professor Leslie London, the head of the Division of Public Health Medicine based in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine in UCT’s Faculty of Health Sciences, to change the status quo and make his own contribution towards achieving social justice in healthcare.

UCT’s development studies ranked among top 10 worldwide
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has moved from 10th to 9th in the world and is among the top 100 institutions for a further four subjects. This is according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2022, released earlier this month.

Taking the road less travelled – to graduate with a triple major degree
When starting his studies at the University of Cape Town (UCT), inspirational graduate Yuri Behari-Leak, intended to obtain an MBChB, but his destiny wasn’t in the medical field. “I started studying a Bachelor of Social Sciences at UCT in 2018 and was actually supposed to pursue a medical degree, but fate steered me towards law and the humanities and I haven’t looked back since,” he said.

Law student’s rare upgrade to graduate with PhD after submitting an LLM
What started out as an LLM in the Department of Private Law under the supervision of Professor Hanri Mostert in 2018 has instead ended with Rebecca-Lee Pein graduating with a PhD during this March 2022 graduation season. Thanks to the extensive work she put into her dissertation on artisanal mining, she was accepted for the rare opportunity to upgrade from an LLM to a PhD.
