UCT professor appointed chief medical officer for Paralympic Games
Wayne Derman, professor of sports medicine with the UCT/Medical Research Council Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sport & Exercise Medicine, has been selected as the chief medical officer for the South African team heading to the London 2012 Paralympics in August.

UCT to launch dialogue series on concerns, challenges in climate change

UCT researchers raise R30m for new heart valve start-up
Research conducted at the University of Cape Town has sparked the formation of 2 new biotechnology companies, which have attracted investments totalling R30 million towards the development and manufacture of new devices that can replace damaged heart valves without expensive open-heart surgery.

UCT doing its bit to improve poor mathematics and literacy levels at local schools
While the rest of the country's learners take a well-deserved winter break from school, the University of Cape Town is set to remain a hub of activity when learners from surrounding communities descend on Upper Campus to attend the Maths and Science Education Project (MSEP) on 4-6 July and the 100-UP project, on 11-13 July.

New UCT facility makes primary health care more accessible to Cape Flats residents
The University of Cape Town Faculty of Health Sciences has officially launched a new student learning centre in the Cape Flats suburb of Retreat, where students will work and learn in the kinds of health-care conditions they will probably encounter often during their careers.

SARS not likely to score against World Cup players.
The excitement of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is not just in the stadiums and fan parks, it's also in the bookkeeping. UCT PhD student Craig West focused his thesis - "The taxation effects for foreign international sportspersons" - on foreign athletes playing in South Africa and their staff. Included in his scope were the legislative provisions applicable to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

UCT appoints first law woman as Dean
Professor Pamela Jane Schwikkard has made history at the University of Cape Town (UCT) by becoming the first woman to be appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Law. She will succeed Professor Hugh Corder on 1 January 2009.
