UCT to host 16th annual International Education Association of South Africa (IEASA) conference
The theme of the conference is: Promoting Higher Education Internationalisation through International Research Collaborations, Partnerships and Innovative Teaching. It will seek to define what internationalisation means or should mean for institutions in South Africa.

I have the pleasure to announce the discovery of a compound which will be of the first ever clinical candidate researched on African soil as part of a modern pharmaceutical industry drug discovery programme.

African research identifies strong candidate for possible single-dose malaria cure
A recently discovered compound from the aminopyridine class not only has the potential to become part of a single-dose cure for all strains of malaria, but might also be able to block transmission of the parasite from person to person, according to a research collaboration involving the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), based in Switzerland, and the Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3-D) at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Strategies to Overcome Poverty and Inequality: Towards Carnegie III will look for effective ways to reduce inequality and poverty in its many forms. The conference will follow on from 2 historic Carnegie inquiries which focused on highlighting and addressing poverty and inequality in South Africa.

UCT's Kaplan Centre to host conference with world renowned scholars on Holocaust Scholarship
A panel discussion on "Nazism and the Holocaust: Intersections with the South African Experience" will be one of the key events of a 3-day conference hosted by the Kaplan Centre at the University of Cape Town in association with the South African Holocaust & Genocide Foundation. The international conference will explore aspects of Holocaust historiography.

Nurses as effective as doctors in treating HIV patients
Nurse-centred care of HIV patients can be just as safe and effective as care delivered by doctors and has a number of specific health benefits, according to a new study led by the University of Cape Town (UCT) and University of East Anglia (UEA).

This public conversation will feature Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who continues even in his retirement to speak on issues of moral integrity; Professor Bernard Lategan, the Ombudsman for Stellenbosch University and the founding director of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study; Ms Ferial Haffajee, the editor of City Press and a council member of the SA National Editors' Forum; Dr Sipho Pityana, the chairman of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution; Khayelitsha community organiser Ms Noncedo Bulana; and SRC presidents Ms Amanda Ngwenya of UCT, Mr Ayabulela Mahlathi of the University of the Western Cape and Mr Jan Greyling of Stellenbosch University.

Interview opportunity for Cape Town plant lovers: world-renowned botanist Peter Linder
Nature lovers who appreciate the abundant and unique plant life of the Cape Peninsula will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions of Professor Peter Linder of the Institute for Systematic Botany at the University of Zürich. Linder was formerly a lecturer in Plant Systematics at UCT from 1987 to 2001. His research interests include the evolution of Cape flora and the geographic distribution of plant species in Africa and the Southern Hemisphere.

UCT Math Circle quartet make South Africa proud at the International Mathematical Olympiad
Western Cape young mathematicians and the University of Cape Town's Mathematics Competition participants Sean Wentzel (Westerford High School), Kira Dusterwald (Springfield Convent Senior School), Ashraf Moolla (Rondebosch Boys High School) and Robert Spencer (Westerford High School) were South Africa's best performers when they participated in the 52nd annual International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in the Netherlands last month.

Helicopter emergency landing at UCT
UCT confirms that a small private helicopter made an emergency landing in Cross Campus road on middle campus this morning at 9:00. No one was injured.

No injuries in organic chemistry lab explosion on UCT Upper Campus
An explosion occurred in an organic chemistry laboratory on the seventh floor of the PD Hahn Building at the University of Cape Town in the early hours of Thursday, 2 September 2010. Nobody was in the lab and there were no injuries. Damage to the facilities is being assessed.
