Redressing past injustices through art
Reshaping the University of Cape Town’s art collection and transforming it into a resource for researchers, curators and students is what UCT’s Works of Art Committee aims to achieve. The committee plays a critical role in redressing some of the past’s injustices through its commitment to purchase artwork by both prominent and emerging artists in South Africa.

UCT student residence first in SA to get Green Star rating
With its water and energy savings and full suite of disability features, the University of Cape Town’s new 500-bed Avenue Road Residence is the first South African student housing development to be awarded a Green Star rating from the Green Building Council South Africa. The project achieved a four-star rating.

Study explains global plant biodiversity patterns in Cape Floristic Region
What explains global patterns of plant biodiversity – environmental history or ecology? A new study, involving University of Cape Town researchers, argues that biome ( an area of the planet that can be classified according to the plants and animals that live in it ) stability is the strongest predictor of biodiversity. Areas that are brimming with species diversity are so because they have been ecologically stable for long periods of time, allowing evolution to forge ahead undisturbed.

UCT academics promote women in science at international event

African scientists contribute in efforts to reduce Africa's high disease burden
The World Bank estimates that Africa's disease burden stands at 25% of the global figure. In efforts to reduce this burden, up to 300 African scientists are converging in Accra, Ghana, this week. They will map out progress of a multi-million, multi-country and multi-year genomic research programme to increase understanding of how human genes and the environment are contributing to Africa's increased susceptibility to disease.
