Africa Day is a reminder of Africa’s unique role in global observations and, more critically, the importance of building capacity within marine science across sub-Saharan Africa.

These photos were taken on field trips to the Kunene Region in the far north-west of Namibia.

For me, being African is to revel in the splendour of our world, to feel the warmth of the rising sun and be caressed by the gilding of light as the sun dips.

These are pictures of my visit to the Sterkfontein Caves – Afrikaans for “strong spring” – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Celebrating Africa is celebrating the richness in cultures and religions and respecting the history that led us to this moment.
