Dear students and colleagues
This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:
1. VC staff farewell
The Chair of Council, Mr Sipho M Pityana, invites all academic, insourced and PASS staff to join him in bidding farewell to the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Dr Max Price, on Tuesday, 19 June 2018, from 13:00 to 15:00 in the Memorial Hall. Refreshments will be served.
Please note: The VC staff farewell is not to be confused with the farewell event organised by the Development and Alumni Department (DAD), which is to be held on 13 June. Staff who are UCT alumni may have received an invitation to the DAD event, which is fully subscribed. The DAD farewell event on 13 June is for Western Cape alumni and the event on 19 June in Memorial Hall is the official farewell to Dr Price for all UCT staff members.
2. IRTC hearings
The UCT Institutional Reconciliation and Transformation Commission (IRTC) has issued a statement on the progress of its work. In the statement, the IRTC encourages and calls for further submissions towards its continuing process of fostering reconciliation and forging a path for transformation at UCT. The statement further explains that this round of submissions seeks to contribute to the second and more complex transformation part of the IRTC’s work.
The statement further states that the IRTC will conduct a road show across all UCT faculties to promote the visibility of the IRTC commissioners.
The IRTC has also recognised the need to issue another call for submissions and will allow late submissions in an effort to reach as many constituencies and individuals as possible. The hearings will be held on 8 and 9 June 2018 at UCT. The hearings will be live-streamed on 8 June 2018. Details will be on the UCT homepage.
For submissions, please contact Candice Amon.
3. UCT Decolonial Winter School
The UCT Decolonial Winter School will host a series of events from 24 to 30 June on topics relating to decolonial theory and practice. The school seeks to reimagine the teaching environment outside the confines of the traditional classroom and lecture theatre. Activists, scholars and community organisations facilitating daily sessions will be challenged to reconstruct their teaching praxis as they present on contemporary topics in South African discussion – ranging from land reform and resistance to history, sustainability and actualising justice.
The Decolonial Winter School is being organised by UCT alumni and postgraduates and is being supported by the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Transformation. Activists and everyday people are invited to attend.
4. Protea Hotel Mowbray: Exclusive rates for UCT staff and students
The Protea Hotel Mowbray, which is owned by UCT, is running specials for staff, student and group bookings. The exclusive offers for members of the UCT community include rates from R750 per night.
5. Early retirement of Mr Sakkie Janse van Rensburg, ED: ICTS
Mr Janse van Rensburg, the executive director of Information and Communication Technology Services (ICTS), has taken early retirement. He will be leaving the university on 30 September 2018.
6. Exams and clarity over deferred exams
In a statement issued on 16 May 2018, it was ambiguously stated that students who wished not to write exams during Eid could apply for deferred exams “to be written early in the second semester and not later than six months as has been the case previously.” While students can still apply for deferred exams, the statement inadvertently gives the impression that an exam can be set at any time within the six months.
Students wishing to apply for deferred exams are advised that the deferred exam will be written in the first week of the second semester and not six months later as had been the case previously. The Communication and Marketing Department apologises for any possible confusion caused by the ambiguity of the previous communication on this matter.
Exams commenced on 30 May and will run until 15 June 2018. Students can access their personal exam timetables using their student numbers. Students are advised to check their seat numbers at the exam venues or online on the morning of their exams.
