The University of Cape Town (UCT) recently hosted its inaugural Sitting Volleyball Tournament in collaboration with ParaVolley Western Cape and UCT Volleyball, marking an exciting moment for adaptive sports in South Africa.
Held at the UCT Sports Centre on Tuesday, 24 September, the event welcomed five teams from across the Western Cape, including a home team from UCT.
The tournament showcased the dynamic and inclusive nature of sitting volleyball, where players remain seated while competing, levelling the playing field for athletes of all abilities. The Thuma Mina club from Khayelitsha emerged as the champions of the tournament.
Sitting volleyball offers a unique experience, requiring both mental and physical agility as players must rely heavily on upper body strength and rapid decision-making. Former standing volleyball players and newcomers alike expressed their love for the sport, with one player sharing how the sport provides therapy and a sense of belonging. UCT, the first South African university to host a sitting volleyball event, hopes this tournament is the start of many more, as the university aims to build momentum and encourage regular participation.
