2022 Highlights
With COVID-19 regulations repealed, the University of Cape Town (UCT) was able to host more in-person events around campus. CMD recorded some of the activities.

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, UCT held a graduation dubbed the ‘walk of celebration’ for the March 2022 graduands outside the Sarah Baartman Hall. Graduates had an opportunity to invite up to three of their guests to watch them walk across a platform outside the Sarah Baartman Hall; and have their names called out while the vice-chancellor and their loved ones congratulated and celebrated with them. UCT students, their loved ones and academic staff were delighted to be back inside the Sarah Baartman Hall for the July PhD graduation ceremony after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus of COVID-19. Photos Je’nine May.
For Women’s Month, UCT’s focus was on celebrating womxn and womxn’s achievements. After two and a half years of virtual events, in 2022 we were able to celebrate Women’s Month in person again at a luncheon hosted by UCT Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng. September is a month during which South Africa celebrates its diversity of cultures, traditions and heritage. At UCT, we celebrated heritage month through art, music, dance and seminars on history and culture as various departments, faculties and student bodies showcased their commitment to transformation and inclusivity, which form part of UCT’s Vision 2030 strategy. UCT welcomed high school learners, their families, and teachers to its #FutureUCTGraduate Open Day. The event presented an ideal opportunity to explore the vast range of undergraduate study options at UCT; and prospective students got the opportunity to attend lectures by academic members of staff from various faculties, visit faculty buildings and residences, partake in a number of fun activities, go on library tours, as well as receive information about financial assistance and other support that will be available to them. UCT Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng hosted the UCT Staff Annual Awards on 30 November at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The annual event recognises staff excellence and commitment to the advancement of institutional values that make UCT a leading, research intense institution. Photos Lerato Maduna and Je’nine May.
Almost 1 500 students graduated from UCT’s six faculties during the December 2022 graduations. Sounds of ululations, clapping and cheers were heard as excited parents and friends celebrated graduates who were hooded and capped by UCT Chancellor Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe outside the Sarah Baartman Hall.
