In remembrance: Phindiwe Sondamase

It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of our colleague Ms Phindiwe Sondamase (46), a residence facilities assistant at Obz Square residence. Ms Sondamase passed away on Monday, 3 February 2025 due to natural causes.
She joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) on 1 January 2013 and has served the university with dedication for over a decade.
Ms Sondamase will be remembered by her colleagues as someone who stood out as a beacon of joy, kindness and consideration. Her colleagues said she truly cared for others, had a genuine smile and always knew how to make everyone – particularly the students in residence – feel seen and valued. She will also be remembered for always ensuring that her words were rooted in care, helping others learn and grow while never making them feel small.
Her colleagues said Ms Sondamase’s kindness would continue to inspire them, and her memory will forever be a cherished part of the Obz Square and the broader Student Housing community.
She is survived by her daughter Sihle and son Mika.
Student Housing will hold a memorial service for Ms Sondamase on Thursday, 13 February 2025 at 10:00 at Upper Campus Residence.
Ms Sondamase will be laid to rest on Saturday, 15 February 2025 at the International Gospel of Christ Ministries, 51 Govan Mbeki Road, Philippi, Cape Town (next to Canax Hardware).
The university has reached out to offer support to Ms Sondamase’s family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved her during this time of bereavement.
