Removal of UCT artworks is about curation, not censorship, says Price
The removal of works of art at the University of Cape Town is intended to help create a process of inclusive engagement and discussion to help advance transformation in the area of art curation; it is not intended to censor any artworks, Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price says in a letter distributed to the campus community today.

UCT Maths Competition draws 8 000+ learners from across W Cape
The 40th University of Cape Town Mathematics Competition will take place on Upper Campus on Thursday, 7 April 2016. The annual event will draw more than 8 000 participants representing 170 high schools in the Western Cape, including schools from as far afield as Atlantis, Ceres, Hopefield, Vredendal, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Worcester, Bredasdorp, Laingsburg and George.

UCT appoints Prof Alison Lewis first female Dean of EBE
The University of Cape Town has appointed Professor Alison Lewis as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (EBE) - the first woman to receive such an appointment. She will take up her new position on 1 June 2015.

Removal of Rhodes statue concludes robust process at UCT
The removal today of the Cecil John Rhodes statue from the University of Cape Town represents the successful conclusion of the energetic process UCT announced last month to allow as many people as possible to express their views about the fate of the statue.

Permit for temporary removal of CJ Rhodes statue granted
The University of Cape Town and Heritage Western Cape hereby confirm that a permit has been granted to UCT for the temporary removal of the Rhodes statue from the campus. These steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the statue while matters concerning its future are resolved.

Burning Renosterveld less often better for its survival
University of Cape Town researcher Dr Odette Curtis has found that for the threatened Renosterveld ecosystem to survive and be properly managed, it should burn less frequently as believed - preferably at intervals of between 8 and 15 years. Previously, ecologists have advised burning it every 3 years.

UCT researchers assist in tsetse fly genetic code breakthrough
An international team, including researchers at the University of Cape Town and Yale University in the USA, has sequenced and annotated the genetic code for a representative species of the tsetse fly (Glossina morsitans), which carries the potentially fatal African trypanosomes to humans and animals in sub-Saharan Africa.

H3-D in the news: New UCT collaboration to fight TB to benefit patients
The H3-D Drug Discovery and Development Centre at UCT and Celgene Global Health (CGH), a division of Celgene Corporation, a global biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and delivers disease-altering medical innovation for patients in need with cancer and immunology and inflammatory diseases, have joined efforts to identify and to develop next-generation life-enhancing medicines for patients with tuberculosis (TB).
