"Brazilian keratin type" hair-straightening products pose serious health risks - UCT study
Researchers at the University of Cape Town have found that most commercial "Brazilian keratin type" hair-straightening products, tested in a study, contain unacceptably high and dangerous concentrations of formaldehyde.

San communities will care for returned land - UCT researcher
Looking at the land claim by the Khomani San and Mier communities on the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, University of Cape Town researcher Johane Dikgang has found that land restitution does not necessarily reduce poverty. However, the Khomani San can be trusted to be good environmental stewards, and there is indeed scope to generate revenue that they could share between them and South Africa's national parks.

50% of rape survivors suffer from PTSD - UCT study
A study conducted by University of Cape Town researcher Dr Anastasia Maw examines the psychological impact of rape within the South African context. Dr Maw's thesis, The psychological impact of rape: A longitudinal study of adult female survivors in the Western Cape, reveals that roughly 50% of rape survivors suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

UCT's annual Memorial Run aims to keep disadvantaged warm
The Shoe Drop, an initiative to help Cape Town's disadvantaged communities to keep warm this winter, will form part of a 10km annual memorial race, hosted jointly by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) and the University of Cape Town on Sunday, 5 May, at 7am at UCT's middle campus.

UCT appoints leading academic to Van Zyl Slabbert Chair
The Open Society Foundation for South Africa has provided an initial 5-year grant to fund a series of Van Zyl Slabbert visiting professorships in the Political Studies and Sociology departments at the University of Cape Town between 2013 and 2018. The 2 departments fall within the Faculty of Humanities at UCT.
