UCT opposes passage of info bill without critical changes
The University of Cape Town notes with extreme disappointment the fact that Members of the South African parliament voted in favour of the proposed Protection of State Information Bill. This despite the extraordinary strong civic voice that has risen against the proposed Bill.

UCT blacks out website to protest government move against freedom of information
The University of Cape Town has blacked out its home page (www.uct.ac.za) today in protest against the current version of the Protection of State Information Bill, which has been returned to the National Assembly for vote today.

Aspirin cuts cancer rates in people with hereditary risk by 60%
Research has provided proof that taking a regular dose of aspirin reduces the long-term risk of cancer in people with a family history of the disease by about 60 percent.

USHAWCO helps learners to SHINE
With a social entrepreneurial spirit, SHAWCO (Students' Health and Welfare Centres Organisation) at the University of Cape Town introduced the SHAWCO SHINE programme to support students in grade 10, 11 and 12, by improving their academic results, boosting their confidence as well as stimulating their ambitions for further tertiary education.

UCT researcher to receive L'Oréal-UNESCO Life Sciences award
Professor Jill Farrant, the Research Chair in Plant Molecular Physiology in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Cape Town, is 1 of the 5 exceptional women scientists from around the world who will receive the 2012 L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards in Life Sciences for 2012. She will receive her award and US$100 000 prize money at a ceremony at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in March 2012.

UCT conference to address challenges in treating and understanding lung diseas
The University of Cape Town, in association with the Hull/York Medical School, University of York, will host a conference on "21st Century Challenges of Chronic Lung Disease" on 14-16 November 2011, in the Institute for Infectious Disease & Molecular Medicine (IIDMM), on the Faculty of Health Sciences Campus of the University of Cape Town. Senior clinical and basic scientists will present a research-based overview of specific challenges associated treating chronic lung diseases and how current research efforts are increasing the opportunities for future therapies.

UCT researcher's book shines light on mysterious African bats
Insects and a few bird species usually get the credit for pollination, but fruit bats are known to pollinate more than 500 species of flowering plants worldwide. Fruit bats also help disseminate forest tree seeds and aid in habitat regeneration and restoration. In fact, as predators, pollinators and seed dispersers, bats worldwide play an important role in conservation science and biodiversity.

Sports drink is novel pay-off for UCT sport scientist
University of Cape Town Associate Professor Andrew Bosch's years of toil in a lab have culminated in the production of a new protein-based, muscle-recovery product called PeptoSport. Manufactured by DSM Nutritional Products South Africa as part of its Pepto range, the drink comes in powder form and is mixed with water.

UCT trauma and forgiveness scholar to deliver inaugural lecture
University of Cape Town's Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, a researcher in the field of trauma, empathy and forgiveness and a former member of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, will deliver her inaugural lecture at the university on Thursday 11 November.

How has humanity changed the weather?
It has just been the hottest hot season on record - or the driest wet season. The local television weather presenter is asked: "Are our past emissions of greenhouse gases to blame for this unusual weather event?" Until now there has been no dedicated service to address this sort of question.

On 3 December this year, Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town will be celebrating 40 years since the first successful human heart transplant by Professor Christiaan Neethling Barnard and his team of medical professionals.

UCT and Amalgamated Transport Services enter into agreement on section of Jammie Shuttle route
The University of Cape Town and Amalgamated Transport Services have signed a memorandum of understanding concerning the transport routes between the Mowbray and Claremont taxi interchanges and the Jammie Shuttle terminus on the Lower Campus.
