SASSU sports roundup

22 July 2002
UCT students returned with a collection of medals from the various sporting events hosted by the South African Students Sports Union (SASSU) around the country over the July vacation, with the climbing, fencing, table tennis and gymnastics taking top honours in their contests. Here is a sample of the results from the SASSU Winter Tournaments involving UCT.

Fencing
The UCT fencing team was crowned SASSU champions thanks to some fine individual performances. Reigning UCT Sportsperson of the Year, Shih-Ya Huang, took silver in both the Ladies Foil and Ladies' Epee events. In turn, Ian Jonker finished first and second in the Men's Epee and Men's Foil clashes, respectively. Roger Fok also secured himself the highest position on the podium, winning the gold medal in the Men's Sabre event.

Table Tennis
The men's team paddled itself into the championship crown, while the women's team finished second. The UCT side also won the mixed doubles event, while UCT students earned both first and second place in the men's individual contest, and second spot in the ladies individual.

Monday Paper wishes to extend its heartiest congratulations to all the above players and teams, as well as to those not mentioned in these sparse passages. We also hope to cover some of these events in more detail in upcoming editions.

Climbing
Once again displaying their prowess when it comes to scaling lofty peaks, the Mountain and Ski Club's climbing team made its way to the top of the medal pile, finishing first in the SASSU competition.

The team also finished first last year, and have enjoyed a number of good years and performances at SASSU.

Gymnastics
The UCT squad could not quite tumble and turn itself into top position, but a number of outstanding performances saw the team finish third overall. Katherine Mann finished first in the Level 3 event, as did Marion Hanson in the Level 1 contest. Margot Scheffer earned herself the bronze medal in the Level 1 competition. Anthony Goble also made his mark, winning gold in Level 3. Taking part in the Olympic class, Thomas Basson and Thomos Birch finished second and third respectively.

Surfing
The surfing team braved the icy cold and managed second place in their competition. Team luminary Ewald van Heerden, a regular in the national side, was selected for the SASSU team.
