Agony as hockey women pipped by Vics

Goalbound: Natalie le Brun on attack as UCT sought an eleventh hour equaliser against Vics.

A gutsy second-half comeback sadly came all to naught for the women's hockey first team as they conceded a last-gasp goal to go down 2-3 against Victorians in the side's premier league clash on July 26.

Playing at the University of Stellenbosch sports grounds, the UCT students were down 0-2 at half-time, but set the game up for a thrilling finale when they scored twice in quick succession. Sarah George netted the first goal for UCT with about 15 minutes to go in the match. Two minutes later, Lauren Seaman grabbed the equaliser.

The game went to and fro in the final stages, with neither side able to break the deadlock. Scores remained level until just over a minute to go when Vics struck the decisive blow. Running in from the left flank, a Stellenbosch striker squeezed the ball into the UCT goal past the desperate dives of goalkeeper Leanne Wicks and defender Mandy Hubbard.
