Sports science gets funky

23 September 2003

In today's technology-driven society, children are becoming increasingly sedentary. Together with this, many children don't participate in traditional extra mural activities at school. As a result, these children could have difficulty in social interaction and may have a negative perception of physical activity.

In addition, self-esteem issues could arise.

Funky Fitness is a programme run by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) for eight to 12-year olds and includes physical activity as well as equipping the child and his/her parents with the necessary tools required to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The next Funky Fitness information session takes place on Tuesday, September 23, at 18h00 at the SSISA in Boundary Road, Newlands. For more information, please call (021) 659-5600 or e-mail nleroux@ssi.uct.ac.za.
