Five-star staffer who goes beyond the call of duty

15 March 2004

Pillar of strength: Wendy Cornilieus (seated) with SHAWCO director Varkey George.

Referred to as "the mother of SHAWCO", administrative assistant Wendy Cornilieus has been nominated as this week's five-star staffer.

"She takes it upon herself to see that everyone is happy and that everyone eats," said SHAWCO director Varkey George. "Wendy is a person that people can confide in and her best feature is that at all times she has a catching smile."

Appointed to assist in SHAWCO's finance department, Cornilieus has been praised for volunteering her services in other areas to ensure the success of the organisation.

George pointed out: "SHAWCO went through some very difficult times recently, facing a serious financial crunch, and Wendy was there, offering her support and help to see things through.

"In addition, she has, for no extra pay, taken on the role of assisting me in keeping my diary and lending a hand in difficult negotiations with staff and students. Nothing is too much for her and I wish we had more staff like her in organisations because then every workplace would be such a pleasant place to come to."

For Cornilieus, her nurturing instinct is part of being a woman and she constantly looks for the more humane aspect of business.

"Besides all the policies and procedures there are people and that requires caring and empathy. I'm very happy working for SHAWCO, I enjoy being here and working with fantastic people," she added.

Asked what motivates her, Cornilieus responded: "I try and live one day at a time, doing my best just for today. I believe that the more I give of myself for the good of others, the more I receive in blessings and friendships."
