Next Pass Forum meeting

The next Pass Forum will take place on Friday, September 3, from 11h30 to 13h00. The changed time applies only to this session as the Senate Room was unavailable at the usual time. Please remember to give Dr Jim McNamara suggestions of topics you would like to have addressed.

International Adult Learners' Week

International Adult Learners' Week will be held from September 6-11. During and around this week, South African and international learners and educators will gather to celebrate their achievements and promote a culture of lifelong learning. A multitude of local celebrations at adult learning centres throughout the country will culminate in provincial and national award ceremonies that showcase innovative programmes and acknowledge the achievements of exceptional learners and educators. Started in 1996, Adult Learners' Week aims to mobilise the funds and resources needed to facilitate an integrated approach to adult learning and development. It also hopes to reflect on the challenges facing an estimated 10 million South Africans who are functionally illiterate. While a national conference on September 6 and 7 will provide a much-needed opportunity to all stakeholders to share ideas and experiences, an international conference from September 9-11 will highlight the role literacy and adult education play in assisting adults to participate more fully in democratic processes. Win R1 000 by completing survey

By simply completing a 20-minute online survey, UCT students stand the chance of winning R1 000. The survey is part of a study on the social experiences of students at UCT. The survey can be found on the psychology department's homepage www.uct.ac.za/depts/psychology - click on the link in the top right-hand corner. The winner of the prize will be decided by randomly drawing one name from the list of students who complete the survey. The winner will be contacted by e-mail or telephone. UCT retirement fund news

In a recent newsletter to members of the UCT retirement fund, trustees disclosed that the additional contributions to members retirement savings in 2003 from cost containment and savings on the cost of risk exceeded R10-million. The effect was that members' accumulation accounts received 19.25% of pensionable salary (whereas the fund structure provides for 16%). Further cost savings have allowed the trustees to increase this to 19.35% from July 2004. Members who did not receive the newsletter can find it on the website www.uctrf.uct.ac.za
