Not only did UCT fare well among the younger age groups at this year's South African Orienteering Championships, held in September at the Lebanon Forest Station near Grabouw, but a pair of the university's more senior academic staffers also won first places. Peter Beighton, Emeritus Professor of Human Genetics and his wife, Greta, won the over-70 men's category and the women's over-65 category, respectively. Orienteering combines cross country running and accurate map reading. The Beightons are both employed part time in the human genetics department, Peter as a consultant and Greta as a senior scientific officer. (Jason Reid of the UCT Orienteering Club (UCTOC) won the men's under-21 age group event, and Mike Sands was placed fifth in the open category in the 11 km classic distance race.
