Vice-Chancellor Professor Njabulo Ndebele received a medal from the English Academy/South African Writers Association during their annual conference in July, hosted by UCT's English Language and Literature Department this year, under the theme Africa in Literature.
"The medal was awarded for his services to English in South Africa, and specifically for the pathbreaking literary which he wrote in the 1980s, introducing as it did a new sophistication in the ways in which the relationship between literature and politics might be conceived," said HOD, Professor Stephen Watson.
