Athletes hit their stride once more

Pointing the way: Odette Olivier is getting better and better, as she showed in one evening of javelin throwing recently.

Records appear to be tumbling fast and furious at the UCT Athletics Club. This time the honour went to 18-year-old javelin thrower Odette Olivier, who already holds the UCT junior and senior records in the discipline. She recorded a throw of 44.69m, almost four metres further than her previous best, at a WP track and field meeting in Parow on Friday, October 21. That put her sixth on the national junior rankings. On the same night, contending with a tricky crosswind, Olivier also threw distances of 42.10m, 42.66m and 43.44m, just, according to UCT coach James Evans, "to show it wasn't a fluke". She wasn't the only UCT record-breaker over the weekend, though. The evergreen Professor Kevin Rochford ran 38:00 at the Longbeach Mall 8km to set a new UCT grandmaster's record.
