Public lecture

The Cross-University Brain Behaviour Initiative will host a public lecture by Professor Michael Zigmond on November 6. The lecture will address the importance of neuroscience research in the developing world, with particular reference to South Africa. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey will take the opportunity to introduce the Brain Behaviour Initiative as one of UCT's Signature Themes at a cocktail event following the lecture. The lecture will run from 17h00-19h00, and will be held in the Learning Centre Lecture Theatre, Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM), Wolfson Pavilion, Faculty of Health Sciences. Discovery Health has announced its benefit changes and increases for 2007. Information packs, which include the option change forms, are in the process of being sent out. To help staff members decide on an option, Discovery will host a series of information sessions on campus. These will take place on:

  • Monday, October 23, at 13h00 in Room 302, Computer Science Building, upper campus
  • Tuesday, October 24, at 13h00 in LT 2 at the Graduate School of Business
  • Wednesday, October 25, at 13h00 in conference room 4, Barnard Fuller Building, Medical School
  • Tuesday, October 24, at 16h00 in LT 2C in the Leslie Social Sciences Building
  • Thursday, October 26, at 13h00 in the Senate Room, Bremner Building, lower campus

Closing Date for applications

A reminder that the closing date for undergraduate applications for 2007 is Tuesday, October 31. Those who wish to apply to study at UCT in 2007 must ensure that their applications reach UCT by the due date as late applications cannot be considered. This applies to undergraduate programmes in all faculties. Application forms can be obtained from the Admissions Office on (021) 650 2128, or on the UCT website under the Undergraduate or Postgraduate links.

Inaugural Lecture

Professor George Janelidze of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics will deliver his inaugural lecture on Wednesday, October 25, at 20h15 in LT 1, Kramer Building on middle campus. Janelidze, a leading research scientist at the Mathematical Institute of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (Tbilisi, Georgia) with a PhD from Tbilisi State University and DSc from St Petersburg State University, became a professor at UCT in 2004. The National Research Foundation named him an A-rated scientist in 2005. His area of expertise is pure mathematics, more specifically category theory and its applications in algebra, topology, geometry, and mathematical logic. The title of Janelidze's lecture will be Thinking Categorically: Mathematics Inside Mathematics.
