Three professors recently delivered their inaugural lectures. In his lecture on The Global Aquaculture Revolution: Why so much seaweed?, Professor John Bolton of the Department of Botany spoke on the unsung value of seaweed - for local abalone production, for example - in the global seafood industry. In Thinking Categorically: Mathematics inside mathematics, Professor George Janelidze of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics looked at category theory, a branch of theoretical mathematics that provides a unified approach to the study of mathematical structures. Professor Jill Farrant's lecture on Surviving Desiccation! An overview of mechanisms used by resurrection plants to cope with drought, dealt with how plants cope with environmental stresses and water-deficit stress (desiccation) in particular.
