Professor Michael Kew, who joined UCT's Department of Medicine as an Honorary Research Associate after retiring from Wits, has retained his A1 rating. This follows the latest National Research Foundation rating cycle. Kew headed the Medical Research Council is Molecular Hepatology Research Unit (MHRU) at Wits, his career there spanning almost 46 years. The unit is one of only a few conducting research at the molecular level into liver disease that affects black Africans. The unit's research findings prompted the Department of Health to make it compulsory for all South African children to be vaccinated against the Hepatitis B virus.
