It was an evening of glitz and glamour as the University of Cape Town (UCT) celebrated the continued commitment of its employees at the Annual Staff Awards on Thursday, 23 November. The evening saw more categories being celebrated than ever before, recognising the university’s greatness in wide spheres. Said Vice-Chancellor interim Emeritus Professor Daya Reddy: “Each of you, along with your colleagues, has helped to maintain UCT as one of the world’s leading universities. We invited you here this evening because you are contributing to South Africa’s future through the development of higher education and UCT’s excellent reputation around the world.”

On Thursday, 23 November, Vice-Chancellor interim Emer Prof Daya Reddy hosted the UCT Annual Staff Awards 2023, which serve to honour and celebrate exceptional individuals at UCT for their contributions through excellence and dedication in research, teaching and service.
The celebration acknowledged staff receiving Long Service Awards and the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Awards. This year, UCT added more categories, including the UCT Book Award, Meritorious Book Prize, Creative Works Award, Meritorious Creative Works Award, Fellowship Award, Social Responsiveness Award and UCT President of Convocation Medal. The evening also hailed staff members who have received ad hominem promotions that will take effect at the beginning of 2024.
The Distinguished Teacher Award is the highest accolade awarded to teaching staff at all levels within the university. Through the award, the University of Cape Town acknowledges the primary place of teaching and learning in the university’s work.
