University of Cape Town’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mosa Moshabela’s journey treks from a humble village in Limpopo to becoming a leader rooted in values of generosity, curiosity, and storytelling.

His story is a testament to the profound influence of his grandmother. Raised in a rural environment, Moshabela was shaped by the unwavering belief and love of his grandmother Elizabeth Ramadimetja Madisha, who, despite her physical limitations due to a stroke, nurtured his sense of humanity, dignity, and confidence. Madisha’s wisdom and stories provided him with a moral compass that has guided him through life’s challenges.

Moshabela’s testimony underscores the critical role grandmothers play as pillars of support, instilling resilience and nurturing the dreams of their grandchildren.

Through his story, we honour the unsung heroes – the grandmothers in South Africa, across Africa, and the world – who selflessly give of themselves for the betterment of future generations.
