If you don’t already know, let’s fill you in. You are spoiled for choice when it comes to food in the Mother City. We have just about everything – from delicious sushi, gourmet burgers and some lekker gatsby too. You name it, and you’ll find it on our streets. We put this list together to help you decide what to have next.

  • A quick bite close by is necessary when you’re on the move. UCT’s very own Food & Connect can be found around the university’s campuses and is your one-stop shop for ethically sourced snacks, food (including kasi favourites such as kotas) and drinks. Why don’t you ‘Build-a Bite’ with Khensani?
  • At the Food Court in Cissie Gool Plaza on upper campus, you’ll find munchies galore, from fresh fruit and vegetables to slap chips and so much more. Go now!
  • If you’re into Mexican cuisine, then head down to Pancho’s. The eatery is located on Lower Main Road in Observatory and their chilli poppers, burritos and nachos are everything! The servings are large, and the prices are good, so book early to avoid disappointment.
  • For a mouth-watering full-house masala steak sandwich or a gatsby of your choice, visit Karbros at the Shell Garage on Main Road in Observatory (a stone throw from the Faculty of Health Sciences campus). You won’t regret it!
  • For all you sushi lovers, Nuri Sushi Factory is the place to be. Find them on Parliament Street in the CBD, Regent Road in Sea Point and Dreyer Street in Claremont. There’s something there for everyone – even for non-sushi eaters.
  • For one of your trusted grab-and-go chain eateries like McDonald’s, Chicken Licken, KFC, Nando’s, Steers and a few more, take a leisurely stroll down Rondebosch Main Road and satisfy those cravings. There’s plenty to choose from.
  • The “bastion” of cheap eats in the city: Eastern Food Bazaar is a laidback canteen-style eatery that offers great food at affordable prices.
  • Fancy something sweet, then visit Unframed Ice Cream. Their unique and delicious flavours are guaranteed to give your tastebuds the ride of a lifetime. Find them in Woodstock, Kloof Street and at the V&A Waterfront.
  • Forester’s Arms (Forries) in Newlands is a must-visit for UCT students. It’s the perfect place for some pub food, especially during big sports matches. It’s a vibe!
  • Seven Colours Eatery is where it’s at for some home-cooked goodness. Pick your mains, grains and sides to create a wholesome meal. It is located at the V&A Waterfront.
  • For coffee lovers, TRUTH Coffee is the place to be. They’ve been named the best coffee shop in the world by UK news agency The Telegraph, and a visit to their steampunk-themed headquarters in the CBD will show you why.
  • Visit Kalky’s for a taste of the best fish and chips this city has to offer. Locals and tourists love it, and while you’re there, be sure to visit and support the local fishing community and snap a pic for the ’gram.
