Zackie Achmat, AIDS activist and chairperson of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), will be honoured as a “world hero†in the European edition of Time magazine.
He is one of 36 people worldwide whom the magazine singles out as “exceptional peopleâ€.
UCT awarded Achmat an Honorary Masters Degree in 2002.
Achmat is recognised for his contribution to the struggle to have antiretrovirals rolled out for the treatment of AIDS patients in South African state hospitals.
Nathan Geffen, spokesperson for TAC, said the honour would also serve to remember those TAC members who had already died of AIDS.
