Student leaders bag scholarships

14 July 2003
Three undergraduates were rewarded for their exceptional leadership qualities in student affairs when they collected Dwane Martin Scholarships at a function hosted at Alumni House last month.

The awards incorporate the Sir Richard Luyt Memorial Scholarship and the recently inaugurated Caltex Leadership and Service Award.

Third year BSocSc student Gerald Gondo, who is vice-chairperson of RAF and Campus Relations Director of Student Enterprises, won the 2003 Dwane Martin Scholarship, clinching the award ahead of eight other short-listed candidates.

Third-year social anthropology and environmental and geographical science student Julia Cloete won the Sir Richard Luyt Memorial Scholarship, named after the former UCT Vice-Chancellor and previous chairperson of the Dwane Martin Adjudication Committee. Cloete has been extensively involved in SHAWCO and is the organisation's incumbent president. A student delegate at the World Summit on Sustainable Development last year, Cloete has also served on the Student Representative Council's (SRC) Transformation Committee.
The Caltex Leadership and Service Award went to Mihlali Gqada. Gqada has represented students in leadership positions in the Humanities Faculty Council and the SRC and is Deputy Speaker in the Student Parliament.

In his address, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Benito Khotseng paid tribute to the "outstanding commitment" shown by all the nominees in their contributions to student affairs and campus life.
