RAG procession celebrates 80 years

15 March 2004

Rio Carnival hit Cape Town's city centre on Saturday, March 6, when thousands of UCT students came together for the annual Remember and Give (RAG) float procession.

It was the 80th procession down Adderley Street, making it the longest-running event of the Student Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (Shawco) and Capetonians came out to show their support and experience true carnival spirit.

Students paraded along with 12 floats, built by various residences and organisations at UCT. The prize for the best float went to RAG Rookies, who built the Sugar Loaf Mountain with a statue of Christ on top.

In second place was engineering and the built environment with a float depicting Pirates of the Caribbean, with third place going to Tugwell residence with their symbolisation of UCT's 175th anniversary.

Kim Brown, floats procession project manager, said: " It went very well, and there were more spectators this year."

The event raised R11 500 in coins, which will go to educational and emotional support for underprivileged children and the elderly.
