Calling all designers

Entries are open for the first Carrol Boyes Functional Art METAL 2005: New Designer Search. Any South African citizen over the age of 18 is entitled to enter by submitting a prototype of a new design for a set of salt and pepper shakers, intended for manufacture in any of the materials that Carrol Boyes Functional Art works in, namely, pewter, aluminium or stainless steel. The winner will receive a cash prize of R50 000 as well as hands-on training in the manufacture, marketing and distribution of the product design that they submitted. Entries close on January 31, 2005. Finalists will be announced in March, and the designs will be exhibited at the Carrol Boyes Functional Art stores at the V&A Waterfront and the Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria. Entry forms can be collected from stockists of Carrol Boyes products, at community art centres and tertiary institutions around the country, or downloaded from www.carrolboyes.co.za. Play readings at the Baxter

Play>Ground play readings, held at the Baxter Theatre Centre, provides a space for actors, directors and audiences to experience the very best of both local and international theatre. The format is one of rehearsed readings where the cast rehearses for one week prior to performances, creating an immediate, dynamic and unique event. Future readings include The Lighthouse Keeper's Wife by Charles J Fourie on November 7 at 17h00. The first Afrikaans entry to the Play>Ground project takes place on November 14, also at 17h00. Written by Eleanor Baker and adapted for the stage by Celeste van Rooyen, Die Ander Marta is a beautiful story filled with dramatic tension, shedding light on matters of the heart of a woman. Tickets cost R15 and can be purchased from Computicket or at the door prior to the performance.

Employment opportunities

The Centre for Extended Learning (CEL) is a registered Section 21 non-profit company that acts as a brokering agency on behalf of six Western Cape public FET institutions and four Western Cape public HE institutions in order to secure significant education and training contracts in the workplace. CEL is seeking a suitably qualified and skilled person to take up a one-year contract as the Executive Officer of CEL (an all-inclusive package of R250 000). CEL is also looking for a suitably qualified and skilled person to take up a one-year contract as the Finance Manager (an all-inclusive package of R175 000). Green Mamba strikes again

As part of its second major southern Africa tour, the multi-award winning comedy Green Mamba returns to Cape Town for its final season at the Baxter's Sanlam Studio Theatre from November 1-21. Starring Ben Voss and John van de Ruit, Green Mamba premièred at the National Art's Festival in Grahamstown in July 2002 and has since clocked up over 230 performances countrywide. Described as a venomous satirical comedy, the play captures the funny side of the trials and tribulations of life in South Africa. On November 1 there is a special preview performance (cost R25) and includes a light meal at the Baxter Restaurant prior to the show and a chat to Voss and Van de Ruit afterwards. Discounts are available from Monday to Thursday for UCT staff, senior citizens and block bookings of 10 or more. These tickets cost R45. Annual General Meeting of Convocation and Alumni Association

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Convocation will be held on November 29 at 17h30, and will be immediately followed by the AGM of the Alumni Association. Members wishing to submit items for consideration should do so in writing to Mr Hugh Amoore, Secretary of Convocation, UCT, Private Bag, Rondebosch, 7701, by November 3. The agenda will be published on the UCT website by November 15. All graduates and holders of UCT diplomas are members of Convocation, as are the vice-chancellor, deputy vice-chancellors, academic staff and research officers.

President of Convocation Medal

The President of Convocation medal is awarded annually to a UCT graduate who has brought credit to the university by their contribution to the wider community. UCT graduates are invited to nominate candidates to be considered for the award. Nominations must be accompanied by a full motivation and be sent to Avril Norton, Department of Communication and Development, Welgelegen, Private Bag, Rondebosch, 7701, by November 30.
