Gabeba Baderoon, a PhD candidate in the Department of English Language and Literature, will receive her doctorate at the graduation ceremony on December 10. Earlier this year she received the DaimlerChrysler Award for South African Poetry for 2005, awarded at a ceremony in Johannesburg on November 4. UCT's Professor Joan Hambidge, who led a distinguished jury panel, which included Unisa Professor Andries Oliphant, Raks Seakhoa and Dr Mongane Wally Serote, described Baderoon as an "original voice that finds the poetic in the ordinary with a fine sense of locality and space. She weaves political and social issues into her poetry without sloganeering. Her work tackles a wide range of themes, astutely shifting the focus from the outside to the inside". Baderoon's collection of poetry, The Dream in the Next Body, will be published by Kwela Books/Snailpress in April 2005. Her doctoral thesis analysed images of Islam in South African media and culture.
