Body donors are essential to teaching anatomy to young doctors and surgeons at the University of Cape Town’s medical school. To honour them, the Faculty of Health Sciences holds an annual ceremony to thank them, and to give staff and students an opportunity to share their experiences with donors’ families and friends.
The cadaver ceremony has become a much-anticipated event, with students writing and reading out letters to their body donors, or playing musical tributes. Families are always touched at the level of respect shown for the remains of their loved ones.
