On 30 April, the University of Cape Town (UCT) Big Band joined the global jazz community in commemorating International Jazz Day. The premise of International Jazz Day is to accentuate the role of jazz music in international diplomacy, diversity, freedom of expression, tolerance and unity. The concert, directed by Associate Professor Amanda Tiffin, featured an exciting mix of music from American big band, Brazilian bossa nova, contemporary jazz and music from some of South Africa’s finest composers: Caiphus Semenya, Ebrahim Khalil Shihab and UCT Alumnus Tutu Puoane. UCT Jazz student vocalists performed alongside the UCT Big Band to a sold-out Baxter Concert Hall.
