02 December 2002
Stepping down: Assoc. Prof Johan Naude (Urology) (back), Senior DVC Prof Wieland Gevers and Assoc Prof Ruth Watson are among UCT's 2002 retirees.

AT A retirees dinner held at Smuts Hall, UCT recently honoured and bade farewell to 58 staff members (some of whom retired earlier in the year). The longest-serving retiree is Jo Fortuin, of Fuller Hall, who has been with the University for 42 years.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Njabulo Ndebele, told retirees that the University was proud to have had staff of their calibre, and that the dinner was fitting recognition of their sterling service, rendered at various levels at UCT.

“For the small and great contributions they all have made towards making UCT the outstanding teaching and research institution that it is, we are truly grateful.”

The following have over 30 years' service: Prof John Atkinson, Modern and Classical Languages (37 years); Ferdinand Barends, Surgery (33); Prof Ronald Becker, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (38); George Benjamin, Communication and Marketing (31); William de Beer, Maths and Applied Maths (38); Assoc Prof Peter Cook, Zoology Department (32); Assoc Prof Peggy Delport, Michaelis School of Fine Art (38); James Ferreira, Chemical Pathology (37); Frederick Lotters, Obstetrics and Gynaecology (38); Gladstone Simelela, Properties and Services (38); John Valentine, Education (38).
