Hockey (women): The women's first team sealed second spot on the WP Grand Challenge log with a 1-1 draw over Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC) on Friday, August 11. That tie took them an unassailable six points clear of WPCC, who have to settle for third spot. Both UCT and WPCC were still a long way back from runaway leaders University of Stellenbosch, with UCT - they have to play Maties in the last fixture of the year - some 28 points shy. But coach Charlie Stuart is rightly proud of his side's performance this year. "Our results were much better than last year," he says. That showed on the score sheets - UCT beat most of the sides they could only manage draws against in 2004. And, of course, they did get the better of Stellenbosch in the semi-final of the Sassu tournament.
Squash (women): There've been a few nail-biters, but the UCT first team - Gina Robinson, Siyoli Lusaseni, Angela Bonora and Annie Aling, along with able stand-in Andrea Naidoo - are not budging from the top spot on the WP women's log. A defeat at the racquets of second-place Camps Bay almost threw a spanner in the works, narrowing the gap between the two sides. But UCT bounced back against Western Province Cricket Club with a 14-1 victory (12 points for sets won, plus two points for the victory). That's given the side some breathing space again, says captain Aling. "We still have quite a few games to play, but if we keep going as we're going, we should win."
