Get up, stand up
With the 2005/2006 Students' Representative Council elections up soon, the Election Officers has kicked off its preparations for the banner event. This year, the election officers have adopted Stand Up! Take Action! Dare to Challenge! The Amazing Race Has Begun as the election theme, with Get Up, Stand Up by reggae icon Bob Marley as theme song. "This is a call to all students, firstly to challenge each other about what they are going to do, stand for election, support and/or vote," said the SDO in a statement. "It is also a call to dare to challenge the system and fight for their rights, by standing for election and taking up office." The timeline for elections is as follows:
Imbizo parking alert
UCT will be hosting the Department of Foreign Affairs on August 23, 2005, when the Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will hold an Imbizo at the Jameson Hall from 09h00 to 13h00.
The Imbizo is based on the Cabinet-approved process of an unmediated engagement between government and the people. Its purpose is to provide the academic community with an opportunity to engage the Department of Foreign Affairs on key foreign policy issues, including the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad), the African Peer Review Mechanism, the African Union and the Diaspora, the South-South cooperation and others.
The Imbizo will be followed by lunch and will end at about 15h00.
Due to the nature of the Imbizo, many areas surrounding these buildings will need to be cordoned off. It will also attract cars to upper campus and this will affect parking.
Vice-chancellor Professor Njabulo Ndebele has asked the UCT community for their support. "I trust that you believe, as I do, that this visit is a major feather in UCT's cap and continues the trend set by President Mbeki's visit to the campus last November, events which are as much a part of our transformation drive as are student profiles and names of buildings."
