Publication count up, research report launched

There were celebrations (and sighs of relief) in the John Martin Room in the Snape Building last Thursday when the Research Office celebrated the formal launch of the 2004 annual research report.

The publication is available at http://www.research2004.uct.ac.za. This is the web-based version, which incorporates the full set of research outputs published during the previous year. The hardcopies are being distributed to all departments.

Other good news celebrated at the launch included the increase in UCT's publication count allocation from the Department of Education. The 2004 count (concluded in June 2005) represented an increase of 26% for the journal articles.

"We are very grateful to the departments for their valuable cooperation during the past year," said Christina Pather, manager of research information.

"We plan to run faculty-specific information sessions from September 21 onwards, which will focus on the next cycle of the research report and publication count process. While we're very happy with the increase in publication count, we know we can still do better."

A reminder to those who plan to attend the next National Research Foundation rating presentation: this will take place on Monday, September 26, in the Senate Room at 10h00.

VC meets with medical HODs

Vice-chancellor Prof Njabulo Ndebele is still steaming ahead with his regular exchanges with staff around campus. Last week, he sat down with HODs from the Faculty of Health Sciences (above) for a special lunchtime briefing.
