If the UCT first team's performance in the local two-day cricket league hasn't been up to snuff over the past two seasons, they always had their one-day record to fall back on. But the side's one-day results in their last two matches must be cause for concern. On November 5, UCT lost in a nail-biter to the Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC) - UCT scored 160, WPCC scraped home (161) with just one wicket to spare. They came close again on November 12, losing by a mere seven runs against Victoria, knocked over for 171 after Victoria posted 178/7 off their 45 overs. But fear not, says Kobus Olivier, club administrator. UCT lost the bulk of its experienced players in 2005, and started this season with eight players straight from school. "In a nutshell, we're rebuilding the team," says Olivier. But there's going to be plenty to build with. Come 2006, UCT will hook a fistful of some of the country's best school cricketers who will join this year's newbies. Give these kids some time to adjust to the level of cricket in the A1 league, and UCT may well relive its glory days a few years down the line, says Olivier.
