It's that time of year again

27 March 2006

Girl power: UCT undergraduates strut their stuff at the RAG procession last year.

Last year was the first time in 80 years that the RAG Procession moved from its original home in Adderley Street to Rondebosch Main Road in the Southern Suburbs.

Due to the immense success of the event and the mass turn-out last year, the procession will be held once again in UCT's backyard - Rondebosch.

The procession is to take place on April 1 from 14h00 until 15h30 and will follow the same route as last year: down Rondebosch Main Road from Star Dust to the Mowbray Library (corner of Klipper Road and Main to the corner of Rhodes Ave and Main).

The theme for this year is Wonders of our World and will include 15 floats, surrounded by festive and colourful students, sprinkled with a diverse mix of music, marching bands, dancers and other performers. This will include the Highlanders, the SACS school Marching Band, circus entertainers and much more.

Over 3 000 people are expected to attend the procession.

A new addition that has already generated a huge amount of hype in Cape Town is the introduction of the RAG Family Carnival. The Carnival will take place directly after the Floats Procession on the Rhodes Recreation Ground (soccer fields on lower campus) and will run from 15h00 until 22h00.

The carnival will have something for everyone.

There will be a stage area with performances by popular artists 340ml, the Finkelsteins, Black Noise and Cassette, as well as drummers, traditional dancers and other local acts.

Over 100 food and craft stalls will be assembled, and for the thirsty, there will be a Castle Lager Village with beverage tent and wine tasting.

There is plenty in store for the children: a Nando's children's area with a jumping castle, face painting and storytelling, various entertainment stalls, including a climbing wall, dunk tank, paintball and giant inflatables, and lots of entertainers such as magicians and clowns.

The floats that took part in the procession will be on display at the carnival. For the first time the public will be able to SMS their vote for their best float.

The fee to enter the carnival will be R25 for adults, R20 for UCT students and R5 for under-18s.

About 5 000 people are expected to attend the carnival.
