Thelonious Monk specialist to visit SA College of Music

Gary Wittner, world-renowned specialist in the music of Thelonious Monk, will present master classes and public performances as part of a tour through South Africa. Wittner is an active educator, arranger, composer, performing and recording artist on the New York and broader scenes. A teacher at Southern Maine University and other tertiary music institutions, he is also the author of Thelonious Monk for Guitar and other Monk articles. His recordings include Now We're Here and Roadway, featuring tuba legend Howard Johnson.

The master classes are on June 19 and 20 at 12h00, Room A26. All are welcome and bring an instrument.

Concert: Gary Wittner Trio featuring Charles Lazar (bass) and Kesivan Naidoo (drums). Playing the music of Thelonious Monk, Wittner and standard jazz material on 20 June at 20h00, Chisholm Recital Room.

President of Convocation Medal

The President of Convocation medal is awarded annually to a UCT graduate who has brought credit to the university by their contribution to the wider community. UCT graduates are invited to nominate candidates to be considered for the award. Nominations must be accompanied by a full motivation and be sent to Pauline Alexander, Development and Alumni Department, Old Administration Building, Private Bag, Rondebosch, 7701, by September 30.
