Squash women land SASSU title

02 August 2006

After years of coming off second best, the UCT women's squash team has finally bagged the SASSU title.

The squad of six - captain Annie Aling, Lauren Cowley, Kim Hall, Siyoli Lusaseni, Anndrea Naidoo and Gina Robinson - ended top of the standings at the tournament, held at the Pietermaritzburg campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal recently. And that despite Robinson, the number two in the team, having to sit out the last few matches after her nose was accidentally broken by a rival. Perhaps winning the SASSU title went some way to make up for that. Robinson had been part of the UCT sides that finished second in the tournament twice before.

"It was a very close, but very nice to win it this time," she says.

Even better, Robinson and Lusaseni have, as the country's best university players, been selected as the only two women in the SA side to compete at the World Student Games in Hungary in August and September. Lusaseni was also named as the captain of the entire national squad.

Robinson may have to bow out, though, because of that broken nose.
