It was business as usual as the Hospital Welfare and Muslim Education Movement (HWMEM) made their annual stopover to UCT at the end of August. On these occasions, as they've done since the late 1960s, members of the organisations hand over a cheque towards their student bursary scheme at UCT. This year, the HWMEM made a contribution of nearly R103 000. More than 30 students benefit from this scheme each year. Although they are under no obligation to do so, students are encouraged to reimburse the money - sans interest - when they are able. Their contributions then feed back into the scheme. The HWMEM also runs similar initiatives at the University of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch University, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and UNISA.
