Food for movement

04 June 2007

The drama outreach project for children of Nebo Primary in Ravensmead, launched by drama student Lendy Swartbooi, is reporting encouraging spinoffs.

Each Saturday the UCT Educational Outreach Project team travels to Nebo Primary to teach 40 children about theatre, drama and its application in the real world.

In a community ravaged by drugs and alcoholism, Swartbooi says there's a temptation to do more when they know children arrive hungry, without shoes - and without hope.

Now retail giant Pick 'n Pay has provided a welcome boost, "filling the empty stomachs" of the young participants.

The UCT Capoeira Club also came to the party, travelling to the school to teach the children how to move in space and how to move to music and drumbeats.

Not that they need much coaching there.
