At the motivational talk delivered at the Sport Science Institute recently, swimmer extraordinaire Lewis Pugh (right) handed the Lifesaving Society's Mountbatten Medal to Achmat Hassiem who last year lost his foot to a Great White shark while on a lifesaving training exercise near Muizenberg.
Hassiem has now turned his energies to training for the Paralympics. He won the South African 100m butterfly South African title, knocking 2 seconds off the record.
Look closely and you'll see the shark's tooth necklace he wears.
"I figured he took my foot, I'll have his tooth. It's a fair trade!"
