The Decolonial Summer School was organised by the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Centring African Languages to Decolonise Curricula (CALDC) and was held in the Neville Alexander Building from 6 to 10 January.
Themed: “Decoloniality: Mothofatso, land and health as impilo in the contexts of globalist agendas”, the symposium joined academics, students and civil society under one roof for five days of in-depth discussion and debate on the topic, with a special emphasis on various key sectors in South Africa, such as education.
Several topics were covered during the five-day programme, including decoloniality in the health sector and the #RhodesMustFall movement. And the symposium garnered an impressive line-up of speakers like Professor Alan Boesak, an anti-apartheid activist and theologian; and Professor Ramon Grosfoguel, Puerto Rican sociologist and an emeritus professor in decoloniality, international migration and Islamophobia at the University of California, Berkley.
