This ceremony will take place in conjunction with the third Steve Biko Memorial Lecture to be delivered by Achebe on Thursday, September 12, at 18h30 in the Jameson Hall.
UCT's Chancellor, Graça Machel, will confer the degree on Achebe. Former President Nelson Mandela will also attend the function. The Steven Biko Foundation will host Achebe in South Africa and he will take part in numerous events to mark the 25th anniversary of Biko's death.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Njabulo Ndebele said: "UCT is humbled and honoured to host this great African literary sage and international scholar on our Campus. It is just fitting that the University honours this highly esteemed African writer for his contribution to the literary world."
Achebe is renowned for his novels describing the effects of Western customs and values on traditional African society. His satirical touch and keen ear for spoken language have made him one of the most highly esteemed African writers in English.
