Singular honour: Applied geophysicist George Smith has received the Reginald Fessenden Medal.
SENIOR lecturer in applied geophysics, George Smith, has received the Reginald Fessenden Medal, a special recognition for his technical contribution to exploration geophysics.
The International Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG) made the award in Salt Lake City recently.
An extract from his citation states that he and his partner, Maurice Gidlow (not at UCT), were “being honoured – for their theoretical development and practical implementation of the seismic fluid factor for rock property estimation and detection of hydrocarbon zones. This AVO procedure has withstood over 15 years of scrutiny and still remains a critical seismic attribute, employed routinely by geophysicistsâ€.
Smith is widely praised by his peers in the field and in the oil exploration industry.
